OBJECTIVES

  • Protect and re-establish local flora to improve habitat for endangered species
  • Eliminate soil erosion and increase the frog population by re-directing run-off into permanent wetlands
  • Provide extra habitat and food sources for endangered swift parrots and eastern barred bandicoots
  • Improve public awareness of indigenous plants and animals and their role in protecting natural heritage

PAST ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Clearing of Woody weeds from 109.6 hectares out of the 144 hectare reserve
  • 22,520 seedlings planted between 1995 and 2004. Survival rate has varied from 30% to 80% depending on soil depth and rainfall during the following summer
  • Conversion of dry old cattle dam into what is now the Frog Dam - both hard and soft landscaping has been completed and over 3,300 seedlings have been planted
  • $213,000 worth of volunteer hours has been contributed by Friends of Knocklofty volunteers since 2000
  • Over $190,000 have been successfully awarded to the group by the Australian Government Natural Heritage program since 1999
  • Walking tracks have been upgraded and directional and interpretative signs and maps have been erected throughout the reserve at the track junctions and various reserve entrances
  • The Glover Track has been established, using reproductions of elements of the John Glover Painting at varous points along the track to illustrate previous activities in the Reserve, plus a full reproduction of the painting with explanatory text in the area where Glover would have created the original painting.

PRESENT PROJECTS

  • Landscaping of Poets Road entrance
  • Water grant with plans
  • Maintenance and rehabilitation of Aurora Powerline Wayleave areas
  • Establishment of a new Summit Loop Track

FUTURE PROJECTS

  • Rehabilitate Knocklofty Terrace entrance to the Reserve
  • Work with neighbours to remove woody weeds on their properties
  • Ongoing maintenance of native bushland
